Paris, France – Former U.S. gymnast Levi Jung-Ruivivar, now representing the Philippines, experienced a frightening ordeal on Monday when she suffered a severe allergic reaction within the Olympic Village. Despite having a tree nut allergy, the 18-year-old insists she did not consume any allergens.
Jung-Ruivivar’s symptoms escalated rapidly, leading to difficulty breathing, throat constriction, chest itching, and significant swelling. Quick-thinking and carrying her EpiPen, she self-administered the emergency medication before seeking immediate medical attention at the Village’s clinic. An ambulance was subsequently called to transport her for further care.
This was only the second anaphylactic shock for the young athlete. Thankfully, after receiving proper medical treatment, she has been cleared to compete in Sunday’s qualification round. While physically fatigued from the ordeal, Jung-Ruivivar is determined to recover fully and perform at her best.
The incoming Stanford University freshman qualified for the Paris Olympics through the World Cup series after obtaining dual citizenship in 2022. She currently trains alongside fellow gymnast Hezly Rivera at WOGA Gymnastics in Plano, Texas.
Jung-Ruivivar has reassured fans of her well-being and is focused on representing the Philippines with pride.
