The MLB postseason rolled on Wednesday with eight teams battling it out in Game 2 of the NL and AL Wild Card series. While three teams advanced to the Division Series (DS), one series was extended to a decisive Game 3 after a dramatic comeback.
Brewers’ Comeback Forces Game 3 Against Mets
The Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a thrilling comeback, forcing a winner-takes-all Game 3 against the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card series. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Milwaukee’s season appeared to be in jeopardy. However, rookie sensation Jackson Chourio smashed a game-tying home run, followed by a two-run homer from Garrett Mitchell, sealing a 5-3 victory for the Brewers.
This marked a historic moment for the franchise, as it was the first time Milwaukee has ever come from behind in the eighth inning of a postseason game to win, breaking a streak of 26 losses in such situations.
Chourio’s heroics were even more remarkable, as he became just the second player in MLB postseason history to hit two game-tying home runs in a single game, joining Babe Ruth from the 1928 World Series. At 20 years old, Chourio also became the fifth-youngest player to hit a home run in the postseason.
The Brewers tied the game early in the first inning after Brandon Nimmo’s RBI single gave the Mets a brief lead. New York reclaimed the lead in the second with an RBI single from Francisco Álvarez and a sacrifice fly by Francisco Lindor. But Chourio and Mitchell’s clutch performances in the eighth shifted momentum, and Chourio caught the final out to secure the win.
Game 3 will be played on Thursday evening at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
Tigers End Astros’ ALCS Streak
In a surprise turn of events, the Detroit Tigers ended the Houston Astros’ eight-year streak of reaching the AL Championship Series with a 5-2 win, sweeping the series. Andy Ibáñez’s three-RBI double in the eighth inning proved to be the game-changer, sealing Detroit’s first ALDS appearance since 2014.
The loss is a devastating blow to the reigning 2022 World Series champions, who have now lost seven consecutive postseason games at home. Despite a strong performance from Houston, including a sac fly from Jose Altuve to take a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, the Tigers capitalized on mistakes in the eighth. Ryan Pressly’s wild pitch allowed Kerry Carpenter to score the tying run before Ibáñez cleared the bases with a clutch double.
Detroit will now head to the ALDS, hoping to maintain their momentum and challenge for a fifth World Series title. Manager AJ Hinch, expressing confidence in his team’s performance, remarked, “Somebody let the Tigers get hot.”
With the Astros eliminated, the Tigers continue their postseason journey, while Houston faces an early exit after years of postseason dominance.
