Mehidy Hasan Takes Charge for Bangladesh’s West Indies ODIs Amid Injury and Controversy

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will captain Bangladesh in the ODI series against the West Indies in the absence of regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is sidelined with a groin strain. Mehidy, currently leading the Test side in the Caribbean, steps into the role as Bangladesh looks to rebound after trailing 1-0 in the Test series.

Senior allrounder Shakib Al Hasan continues to be unavailable, with BCB president Faruque Ahmed citing Shakib’s lack of mental readiness to play for the national team. Shakib, who retired from Tests and T20Is in September, has not featured in any format for Bangladesh since the Test series in India. He recently played in the Abu Dhabi T10 and missed the Afghanistan ODI series in November due to ongoing controversies, including legal troubles and protests against him.

Injuries have further impacted Bangladesh’s squad. Towhid Hridoy is ruled out with a groin injury sustained while playing football, Mushfiqur Rahim is recovering from a finger injury, and Mustafizur Rahman has opted out for personal reasons. Left-handed opener Zakir Hasan has been dropped.

The squad sees the return of Litton Das, who missed the Afghanistan ODIs, alongside the inclusion of players like Parvez Hossain Emon, Afif Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

The Bangladesh squad will depart for St. Kitts on Monday to join the Test players and prepare for the three ODIs, scheduled on December 8, 10, and 12.
