Sri Lanka Dominates as England’s Unbeaten Test Summer Hangs by a Thread

Jamie Smith’s explosive 67 from 50 balls couldn’t prevent England from collapsing to 156 all out in their second innings, setting Sri Lanka a target of 219 to win on day three of the third Test. After England’s top order crumbled, falling from 20-1 to 82-7, it seemed their lead of 60 from the first innings might not be enough to defend.

Ben Duckett (7), Ollie Pope (7), Dan Lawrence (35), Joe Root (12), Harry Brook (3), Chris Woakes (0), and Gus Atkinson (1) all departed in quick succession, leaving England on the brink. Smith’s aggressive innings briefly gave England hope as he punished Milan Rathnayake and Vishwa Fernando with boundaries, adding crucial runs.

Smith’s counterattack came to an end just before tea with England’s lead only 202, and the team soon bowled out for 218. By the end of the day, Sri Lanka had confidently moved to 94-1, with Pathum Nissanka (53*) and Kusal Mendis (30*) guiding the visitors towards a historic victory, aiming for their first Test win over England since 2014.

Commentators noted the game’s balance, but England’s poor batting performance was called “shocking” by Mark Butcher. Despite Smith’s valiant effort, the match now leans in Sri Lanka’s favor as they push for a memorable win.
